When it comes to modern-day dairy farming, Amanda Freund breaks the mold. A third generation farmer and a committed volunteer, Amanda helps with all the family businesses: Freund’s Farm, Freund’s Farm Market, and CowPots. She also spends time traveling around the country as a keynote speaker at women in agriculture and agriculture leader conferences on topics of diversiﬁcation, sustainability, being a young female farmer, work-ing with family. “The land connects us to our past and makes us mindful of our future.
- Green Entrepreneur Among the many earth-friendly efforts on Freund’s Farm, the most high-proﬁle is their invention of CowPots. These 100% biodegradable, odorless, seed-starting pots are crafted out of composted manure. The pots, which were called “fabulous” by none other than Martha Stewart, are sold around the country, including at the Freunds’ own bountiful market, featuring many farm grown foods and ﬂowers started in those very pots.
- Sustainability Leader The Freunds have become recognized national leaders in sustainable practices and recently received the U.S. Dairy Sustainability Award for Outstanding Resource Stew-ardship. In addition, the farm installed 1,200 solar panels that generate enough electricity to meet their needs and even send surplus to the grid. Freund’s Farm is also proud to be the ﬁrst in Connecticut to install robotic milkers.
