Your grandmother’s nut-covered cheese ball was delicious, to be sure. A traditional preparation usually consisted of cream cheese mixed with onions and Worcestershire sauce, then rolled in chopped nuts. For generations, it could be counted on to appear at parties and family gatherings throughout the year.
But lately it seems the classic cheese ball preparation has gone out the window. Today’s cheese balls incorporate new traditions, new tastes, and even new shapes. Some are part appetizer and part work of art, merging form, function, and fun!
It’s no surprise that at Cabot, we love a scrumptious cheese ball. Making them delicious as well as fun to serve and eat is also part of our mission. We took our favorite cheese ball recipe – made with The World’s Best Cheddar of course – and created two of our most popular appetizers.
First, this pine-cone shaped Festive Cheese Ball is made with wholesome ingredients like cheddar and cream cheese with a dollop of tangy Cabot Greek Yogurt.
But don’t let the stated ingredients limit your culinary creativity when it comes to making your cheese ball. This seasonal favorite can be modified in so many ways. In the photo we added tamari almonds to make a beautiful pinecone. Add taco seasoning and cilantro for a south-of-the-border flavor. Chopped pepperoni, onions and green peppers make a pizza cheese ball. Bacon bits are always a welcome addition. Nuts add crunch and flavor. The only limit to the variations is your imagination.
We created our Pumpkin Cheese Ball with essentially the same ingredients, and shaped it like our favorite fall gourd.
If you like you cheese balls in smaller bites, you could make these fun and flavorful Cheddar, Pistachio, and Cranberry Pops for your next get-together. They’re a perfect party snack – easy to make and easy to serve.
Those are just a few of the festive variations on a classic cheese ball from the Cabot kitchens. For even more inspiration we went to the talented food bloggers of the Cabot Cheese Board and found so many amazing cheese ball recipes. Most are savory, but there are also cheese balls that will satisfy even the most insistent sweet tooth. The following are some of The Cheese Board favorites.
