After the solid curds form, the batch of cottage cheese gets cut into smaller pieces and cooked more to release moisture. A washing and draining process then reduces the acidity and eliminates excess moisture. What you’re left with is a sweet curd that crumbles easily to give cottage cheese its classic texture. In one cup of 2% milk fat cottage cheese, there are 194 calories, 5.5 grams of fat and 26.7 grams of protein. Comparatively, carbs in cottage cheese are very low with only 8.3 grams in a 1-cup serving of 2% cottage cheese.

One conducted in France concluded that cottage cheese may help reduce blood sugar levels after eating to potentially benefit people with diabetes.

A 2012 Polish study demonstrated the benefits of adding cottage cheese to a weight loss diet. It followed 60 men and women who had a desire to lose weight. The groups were given a healthy eating plan to follow that included cottage cheese and other foods. At the end of the one-year study, the participants lost weight and saw reductions in their LDL cholesterol, triglyceride and blood pressure levels.

Scientific studies also illustrate the potential benefits of cottage cheese for those following high-protein diets for weight loss or muscle building. A 2011 study found that casein protein, a main form of protein in cottage cheese, helped reduce hunger more than whey protein supplements, and one published in 2016 revealed that casein protein increased the production of the building blocks of muscle tissue after workouts.

 

How To Incorporate More Cottage Cheese Into Your Diet

There are many delicious ways that you can work cottage cheese into your diet. You can:

  • Add it to waffle and pancake batter.

I wonder where all that sodium comes from. I don’t remember seeing that in Europe. Can that be reduced? I love dairy in all it’s glorious forms but that one aspect makes me look for brands that contain less.

I cannot have most dairy. Any chance you might make a lactose free cottage cheese.
All the dairy products we eat are Cabot only.

Could you please, please reduce the sodium in your Non Fat cottage cheese? I mix it with my yogurt almost everyday but finding it tasting more salty than ever.

I love cottage cheese, especially with pineapple. I also like to warm it so it melts and mix in some nutritional yeast, then dip pita chips or rice cakes in it. I agree it could have less salt.

I eat your nonfat cottage cheese everyday for the low calorie protein. I have noticed over the years it is getting very soupy, less curd like. I miss the more solid curd. Did you change your recipe or process?
