Cabot Sustainability – Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day. Every Day.

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, April 22 has become a day around the globe to focus on what we can each do to help protect the planet. Organizers believe that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in the largest civic-focused day of action in the world. Of course, the Earth is also worth our attention every day. Here are just a few of the ways the Cabot community is working hard daily to fulfill our pledge of “living within our means and ensuring the means to live.”

We’ve Got the Power.

Our family dairy farms provide much more than just high-quality milk, several are also pioneers in providing renewable energy, too. In Vermont, the state’s largest utility, Green Mountain Power, partners with two member farms,
Blue Spruce and Foster Brothers Farm, in their innovative Cow Power program. Real Farm Power in Massachusetts was kicked off by Barstow’s Longview Farm in Hadley.

Greener Pastures.

Cabot dairy farmers are noteworthy for their Yankee ingenuity: making the most of every resource on the farm and ensuring that all resources are stewarded well. Check out Freund’s Farm in Connecticut for their innovative biodegradable, seed-starting Cow Pots and Elm Farm on the other side of Connecticut, where the family uses solar-powered blowers to aerate compost piles that yield a value-added, farm-based product much in-demand by local gardeners. More Cheese, Less Waste.

Our creameries are where milk is magically transformed into award-winning dairy products, but we also work incredibly hard to reduce our water and energy use and our waste. Fifty percent of the water used at our plant in Cabot (yes, we’re named after an actual town!) is upcycled from milk using groundbreaking technology. At the same location, we implemented our first solar-powered waste compactor; on a typical sunny day, the solar panel can absorb enough energy to power the compactor for five days. Learn more here.

B the Change.

We are proud to be the first dairy cooperative to meet the stringent guidelines to become a certified B Corporation. B Corps around the world are redefining business success based on the highest standards of transparency, accountability and purpose. At Cabot, we greatly value the multiple bottom lines of responsible profitability, healthy natural resources and community well-being. Read more here.
