Our Must-Make Gifts from the Kitchen

The holidays are quickly approaching and in many cases they’ve become quite a commercial event. This year we want to encourage you to focus less on presents and more on being present during the holidays. Take the time to disconnect, relax and enjoy time with friends and family.  You can still give a gift to show people you appreciate them. But make it meaningful, by trying your hand at a homemade, personalized gift.

There are tons of unique gift ideas that you can whip up right in your kitchen with very little effort. Here are some suggestions:

  • Baking mixes – Use mason jars to layer ingredients for muffins, breads, pancakes, cookies and more. Attach a fun tag with recipe instructions and you’ve made it easy for the recipient to whip up a tasty treat!
  • Flavored extracts – Make a big bottle of vanilla extract and portion into small jars to share with friends.
  • Sugar scrubs – Although they’re not meant to be eaten, sugar scrubs make a great gift to brighten up a cold winter month.
  • Baked goods and treats – Feel like doing the baking yourself? Whip up a batch of muffins, cookies or bars and deliver them to friend and neighbors.

These homemade gifts will certainly be appreciated because they’re both useful and heartfelt. Relax, get creative and have as much fun creating as you do giving!

I have for years been a huge fan of the Cabot’s Vintage Extra Sharp Cheddar that is packaged in the 3lb blocks covered in black wax. I have only found it at Sam’s Club, not even every Sam’s Club. I was really thrilled when I started seeing Cabot’s in Walmart locally, but disappointed that this black wax covered variety is not included in the offerings. I have tried the Extra Sharp and the Seriously Sharp and figure these are the same or close to it, but there is a slight difference in taste and texture to the smaller packages. Today I found Farmhouse Reserve in the cheese section at Walmart and brought home a package to try. Any chance you will be including the wax covered variety to the selections? or is it just me missing the familiar and not recognizing the new package?

Laura, our special 3lb Vintage Cheddar in wax is sold exclusively at Sam’s Club and, as you found, not every store. Waxed cheeses make a great presentation and it’s the way cheese used to be packaged to keep it from molding. Cabot waxed Cheddars can sometimes be found in the specialty or deli section of some stores. Red waxed cheese is Sharp, green waxed is Private Stock, and black waxed is Vintage. If you don’t see your favorite Cabot cheese on the shelves, please speak to the Dairy Manager of the store.

If you enjoy the Legacy Collection’s Farmhouse Reserve, we have a new Founders Collection Private Stock that has a very similar flavor profile. Neither of these cheeses are waxed. You can always buy online as well! http://www.dakinfarm.com/Cabot-Cheese.html ~Rachael
