As parents of more than a few picky eaters, we here at Cabot know the challenge of putting a dinner on the table that gets universal rave reviews. And while we adults may love the chance to try new and creative recipes, who among us doesn’t love some basic kid-friendly comfort food every now-and-again? Especially when those dishes are studded with Cabot’s award-winning products.
Kid-friendly doesn’t have to equal unhealthy and uninspired, though. That’s why we tapped into our think tank of registered dietitian parents for ideas on how to serve a healthy meal that kids will actually eat. Here’s what they told us:
- Let oven-baked and air-frying be the bridge between fried favorites and better for you choices, like these “Not Fried” Chicken Nuggets or Baked Chicken Strips or Oven Fried Homemade Boneless Buffalo Wings
- Serving more veggie-based foods has never been easier in kid comfort food thanks to the popularity of new pastas like chickpea-based pasta. We love it in this classic Vegetable Mac and Cheese
- Pair the familiar with the unfamiliar when trying to introduce new foods. Where to start? Upgrade taco night to Taco Quinoa Bowl night or try this Taco Skillet with Turkey, Cauliflower Rice & Cheddar
- Transform homemade ideas into “kid creations”. The idea of making Homemade Pizza Rolls from scratch may seem daunting, but it can be a fun dinner project for kids and they’ll love what they created!
It’s also important to remember that not all kids crave comfort food all the of the time. Experts remind parents that it can take up to 10 times offering a child a new food before they are willing to try it. That can be frustrating at first, but with time parents often find their kids are willing to eventually try new foods and different dishes. Here are a few of our favorite quick and easy meals for dinner tonight (and we’re pretty sure your kids will like as much as ours do!).
