Maybe it’s an hour a day. Maybe it’s ten hours a week. Or half a lifetime. No matter the measure, time spent volunteering benefits communities in the now and builds towards a brighter future. More than 62 million people volunteer in the United States each year. Those who volunteer are often healthier, happier, and even better suited to find a job. Those 62 million people are serving their communities in tens of millions of ways.

There will always be dark forces at work in our world, but volunteerism and service have the ability to light a new way of thinking. To create a vibrant community where there once was a dark corner. Folks like Cabot Community Celebrity Damien Banks are proving this. He has turned a basketball league into force for good in a community that needed light.

Non-profit organizations rely on volunteers to fulfill their mission. Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, Florida is one of those organizations. They provide housing and programs for underprivileged and homeless families. The organization relies on thousands of volunteers to help fulfill their mission.  They also coordinate training events where volunteer leaders from around the city can come together to share ideas and strategies to strengthen their reach.

Like most of Cabot’s programs on behalf of the farmers’ brand, we look to honor the efforts of those taking the time to turn small acts into a force for good. It led to the creation of Reward Volunteers. Volunteers can log their time spent helping others and win prizes for themselves and the organizations they serve. Now in its fourth year, Reward Volunteers has been used by 3,500 people, logging 270,000 hours to the benefit of 4,000 organizations.

Cabot and our farmer owners have been so inspired by these selfless acts our Community Tour is now traveling the East Coast to not only thank volunteers, but inspire others into action through volunteer fairs and trainings. The Community Tour and Reward Volunteers, along with our partners Points of Light and Create the Good, seek to connect like-minded people to expand the web of giving and create a network of help that can last a lifetime.
